The Nurse's Corner

Each month I highlight a health topic in the newsletter. Feel free to suggest health concerns that you would like to see added in future years.
Blessings, Carol Savoie R.N.

Faith Community Nurse

A Faith Community Nurse (FCN) is a licensed Registered Nurse who considers the meaning of health, healing, and wholeness for individuals of their faith community. The FCN integrates religious beliefs and health promotion principles into normal life cycle events; to celebrate life, enhance coping, wholeness and a sense of peace. The FCN points to resources for developing health and the interpretation of health within a religious tradition. God creates human beings as whole persons – each one a dynamic unity of body, mind, and spirit. Health concerns the proper functioning and well-being for the whole person. Health is good for its own sake; it also is good for living abundantly in relationship with God. A ministry of healing is integral to the life and mission of the church. Part of our constitution states we are to "serve in response to God’s love to meet human needs, caring for the sick and the aged, advocating dignity and justice for all people".

The FCN provides oversight, leadership and guidance in the ministry of health, wellness, and healing in the church community through the following roles:

Health Educator – offers health related information through writings in the newsletter and answers to your question. Provide speakers when possible and classes such as First Place 4 Health, Sign Chi Do (The Art of Moving Prayer), 5 Wishes, and CPR certification.

Health Counselor – acts as a resource person to our church community. Can assess, advise, refer, listen, and pray. The FCN visits members in the hospital, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residences.

Liaison with the community – directs those with health needs to appropriate health and ministry resources and assists them to appropriately utilize the health care system when they are confused, misinformed, or unknowledgeable. The FCN is currently actively participating in the East Valley Committee on Aging and DUET Parish Nurse Ministries.

Spiritual support – offers presence and prayer during visits and times of crisis.

Friend – concerns and cares come into all of our lives. As brother and sisters in Christ, we need not go through those difficult times alone.

Blood pressure screenings – are offered after the worship service(s) on the first and third Sundays.

"Then he sent them out to tell everyone about the coming of the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick." Luke 9:2

"God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1

Gentle words bring life and health." Proverbs 15:4
